Here is what one of our best
customers has to say about it:
As a gadget guy I've seen
other USB security cameras before but I've never been impressed. So, I decided
to try the new USB Security Camera from SpyGadgets.com. It's wireless, weatherproof,
color and has night vision. It uses your computer to record the video and even
notifies you by e-mail or phone when it senses activity in the area you are
watching if you wish.
I've been a customer for
years and they know I give honest feedback and offered to send me one to try
out. I figured they must be really proud of this product so I agreed and here
we are.
Order Process and
Shipping
The
ordering process was easy as always. A simple click here and there and I'm done.
Wait for UPS to bring the package and that's pretty much it. Well, it arrived
within a few days and I opened up the box on my kitchen table. Immediately noticing
a warning to install the drivers before installing the camera or software, I
did that first after I laid everything out.
Initial Impression
The
sun shade on the camera was slightly bent but I straightened it out with little
effort. This USB Security Camera is stout. It feels like there's
a lot of metal in there, not the cheap stuff either.
I noticed little rubber
covers over the antenna connector. I didn't feel it was necessary to cover up
the connector but it just goes to show you how much they care about the quality
of the product. It really made an impression on me since I have yet to come
across a security camera that looks like it was so cared for at the factory.
I attached the antenna and
took a picture of it to show you.
Installing the Software
The
instruction manual is easy to follow and contains many warnings on what not
to do. I installed the software with relative ease and was expecting some hiccup
like other cameras I've installed but found nothing. Simply amazing. I was asking
myself if it could really be this easy. So far, so good.
On to the receiver then
to the camera installation. It's so hard for me to not jump ahead since I'm
not an instruction reader but it really paid off and I got the job done in under
twenty minutes.
Installing the Receiver
The
little receiver box had the same rubber connector protector over the antenna
port so I removed it and installed the antenna. I then attached the included
USB cable to the receiver and plugged it into my computer. If you've ever bought
a printer you know those cables don't come with it. You have to pay out the
nose for a USB cable. This USB Security camera came with one for
FREE!
The computer recognized
the new hardware and installed the drivers automatically. Now, this is a computer
running XP. I'm not sure if it Vista supports it yet.
Installing the USB
Security Camera
Here
I am at 8:45pm and I'm about 10 minutes into the setup process. I decide I want
to watch the camera in the driveway and part of the street out front. I'm lucky
that I have windows in the front of my house so I just opened one up, drilled
a few holes with a masonry bit and ran the power cord through the window to
an outlet nearby. The curtains hide the wire so my wife won't get too upset.
I aimed the camera to where I thought it would get the best view and went back
to the computer room.
The pink dot at the window
right above the car is actually the infrared lights as seen through a digital
camera. It's really not that bright in real life. You can see the red glow of
the infrared LEDs but it's not too noticeable unless you know it's there.
Setting up the Recording
Software
I
get to the computer room and start setting up the software. This time I'm too
impatient to use the manual so it takes me a few clicks here and there to get
started. The camera comes to life and it looks GOOD! I cannot believe that the
signal is actually traveling through a brick wall on the second story all the
way down to the computer room. It's flawless. I have no idea what kind of transmitter
or technology in this thing but it looks really good. I'm very impressed.
REMOTE VIEWING
In the instructions you
are given a unique access code that sets it up so that you can view the camera
remotely. This is probably the coolest feature of all. It's simple and VERY
easy to set up. The only drawback is that it's not full motion video on remote
viewing like it is on your desktop. But, hey, for the price and ease of setup
you can't beat it with a stick.
Motion Detection
The setup allows you to
set up a motion mask or area of detection and the sensitivity. This saves precious
hard disk space and saves you hours of time when going back to see what has
happened. A very nice feature indeed.
Viewing the USB
Security Camera
The
night vision on the camera is green and it makes your eyes look like something
from a horror movie but it works great. I'll try to send some pictures soon.
Here is the end result after a night of watching over the driveway. The picture
is so clear that you can literally see the blades of grass! And the motion detection
is so awesome that it even catches birds flying near the camera. That could
be corrected by turning down the sensitivity but I think it's cool.
I am so impressed with this
camera that I've ordered another one for myself and one for my mother-in-law.
I'm so sure she can set this up for herself and I won't even have to lend any
tech support.
