Hidden Camera Frequently Asked QuestionsHidden Camera Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

1. Where do I start and what exactly do I need?

Whether you're here by luck or by exhaustive research, the fact is that you have a video surveillance need.  Every surveillance situation is different and requires careful thought if your desire is to have a solution that works right the first time.  Our goal is to provide you with the most comprehensive surveillance information resource available so that you are an educated and well informed consumer.

Determine Your Goal

The first thing you need to do is determine your goal.  People usually install surveillance equipment for one or more of the following reasons: deterrence, prevention, prosecution, or evidence gathering.  Knowing what you want to accomplish before spending hours searching for the right solution will save you time and money in the long run.  Do your homework.

Are You In The Right Place?

"If evidence gathering and prosecution is more important to you than deterrence and prevention then you are in the right section.

If you need a system that covers all aspects of video surveillance take a look at the Security Camera section."

2. What is the difference between "wired" and "wireless" hidden cameras?

Wired or hard-wired hidden cameras have a wire that physically connects the camera to your VCR or monitor. Wireless hidden cameras use a video transmitter that sends video to a receiver that is attached to your VCR or monitor.  Think of it like you would a cordless phone, the phone works just the same as if it were connected to the phone jack itself.

*Note: The term "wireless" does not necessarily mean "cordless".  All hidden cameras require some sort of power source.  Most of our systems operate on regular household current while some have the option of adding a battery pack for "cordless" operation.

3. Do the cameras record to themselves?

No. All of our hidden cameras require an external video recorder.  Any VCR with external video inputs (RCA inputs) will work with our cameras. The inputs are yellow, red, or white, and are round. Usually located on the back of your VCR where you attach the cable for your cable TV.

4. Do I have to have a TV connected to my VCR to record the video?

No.  We STRONGLY suggest using a TV to set up your system so you know it's working properly.  After you have set everything up you can remove the TV or turn it off.  Most customers wish to keep the VCR out of sight for obvious reasons and this is perfectly acceptable.

5. How long will my VCR record before I have to start the tape over?

Most consumer VCRs will record up to 8 hours on tapes readily available in stores.  We offer tapes that will enable you to record between 10 and 12 hours.
