Wireless or Cordless?
One of the murky, gray areas of security camera terminology is the debate between the difference in wireless vs cordless technology. For a very long time we offered cameras that had the ability to transmit the video signal to a receiver that was then attached to a recorder. You still had to power the camera, thus making it not totally cordless. This caused confusion and frustration with our customers but that was what we had to work with.
Fast forward to today and with the advance in battery technology we finally have the ability to offer you a truly cordless / wireless camera. But be sure to read the specs closely to make sure. There are still some “wireless” cameras that need a power wire.
90 Day Battery Life Wireless Spy Cameras?
You’ll notice that our XTreme Life cameras advertise a 90 day battery life. The 90 days is average standby life with no recording. This is because every location and situation is different and we can’t know in advance where you’ll use your camera and how often it will be activated.
Here’s how it works:
We use one of the world’s smallest PIR (passive infrared) motion sensors on each of our XTreme Life cameras to put the camera and DVR in hibernation mode. The only power draw is from the motion sensor when no motion is present. The system can sit in standby mode for up to 90 days if there is no motion detected. Now, we both know that’s not really realistic unless you’re putting it in a cabin in the woods somewhere.
The next number you’ll see is constant motion battery life. And that is 16 hours. Imagine yourself standing in front of the camera for 16 hours straight just dancing around like a fool. Again, not realistic but it provides a baseline. Your camera will record somewhere between 16 hours and 90 days (2,160 hours). It is all going to depend on how much motion the camera detects and how long the motion lasts.
