What private investigators do and how they do it.
We all hear about PIs and how they follow husbands and wives around to “get the dirt” on them, that is one type of investigation, there are many different types of PIs, some who are the basis for that stereo type and some who are not. They all want the same thing, information.
Some types of Private investigators include:
Domestic: This is the PI who is hired to find out if a spouse is cheating. Jane thinks John is cheating on her so she hires an investigator to prove it. The investigator gets or does not get the info, gets paid and gives the client all the video and reports. He accomplishes this by doing surveillance of John when he might be cheating.
Liability: This is the investigation of claims against a person, people or entity that something bad happend to a person and they blame the persons that they believe caused it or place where it happened. IE: A person slips at the grocery store and blames the store for a wet floor.
Compensation: This is a generic term for investigations of reported injuries at a workplace. (also, it can be the amount awarded to the claimant) Compensation investigators are usually hired by insurance companies to determine the severity of the injury that the claimant reported. This type of investigation is many times started because the employer or insurance company receives information that the claimant is not as hurt as they claim.
Missing Persons: PIs are hired to find missing persons. Law enforcement does a great job but some families need or want more information. This type of investigation is usually done in person and online. Searching records and talking to family and friends to try and develop a picture of the subject. PIs can dedicate hours, days and even months to this type of investigation.
There are some other Investigators who work on specific cases and are employed full time by companies, to work on only the company’s cases.
The job involves following, without being seen and obtaining a record of a person’s activity. This may be a cheating spouse, or a worker on compensation who has an extra job or a claimant who is not as badly injured as they report.
